Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Generalized Anxiety Disorder may occur when a person experiences excessive, hard to control, anxiety and worry, for more that six months. Usually three or more of the following anxiety symptoms are present:

  • Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge
  • Being easily fatigued
  • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep disturbance

Why You Are Not Crazy:

Keep in mind that our modern lifestyle has confused our brains and our bodies about our safety. And we may end up with a nervous system that can’t tell a physical threat from an emotional one and just won’t shut off.

Fighting or fleeing is often inappropriate today so the anxiety hormones released in stress are not used up and remain in our system for some time.

The increased brain activity of anxiety brings about racing thoughts and a strong impulse to focus only on dangers. Our brain does not want to waste time on or even remember information that is not critical to our immediate survival. As a result our memory and our ability to make long range decisions is often impaired during times of stress.

What To Do

See your doctor, first if you believe you may be experiencing symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Your doctor can assess you and recommend the necessary treatment. Your doctor may also prescribe medication and this can be helpful, calming your nervous system long enough so that counseling and other non-medicinal treatments can work.

Give Counseling A Try. Our bodies do possess their own natural means of stress reduction, but often we need help and practice to put them to work for us. Counseling, group therapy and other treatment methods are highly successful with this.

Self Care. Self Care. Self Care. Taking care of yourself is an important way to provide relief from the stress of modern, daily life. Exercise, laughter, proper sleep, leisure time, a healthy diet, social activities, satisfying relationships (see tend and befriend ) and spirituality provide natural stress relief.

Be easy on yourself and get the treatment you need. Taking good care of yourself is the best way to take care of your family.
